Overview
Where Edit Thinking Becomes Craft

The Videography Class teaches you to think editorially and assemble a rough cut. This course picks up where that leaves off. You learn to edit with precision, grade with intention, mix audio professionally, and export for any platform.

Everything happens in DaVinci Resolve Studio on Apple Mac Studio editing workstations. You work with the full professional toolset from day one. After the course, you can continue on your own machine with the free version of DaVinci Resolve, which covers all the core skills taught here.

Curriculum
What You Learn
01
Interface and Project Setup
DaVinci Resolve's workspace: Media, Edit, Colour, Fairlight, Deliver. Project settings, frame rate, resolution, and media management. Setting up a project that stays organized from ingest to export.
02
Timeline Editing
Trimming, ripple, roll, slip, and slide. Multicam editing, compound clips, markers, speed changes, and transitions. Building a fine cut from a rough assembly with precision and control.
03
Colour Grading: Foundations
Primary colour wheels, lift/gamma/gain, curves, and the parade/waveform scopes. Correcting exposure and white balance across an entire timeline. The difference between correction (fixing) and grading (styling).
04
Colour Grading: Nodes and Power Windows
Node-based grading workflow: serial, parallel, and layer nodes. Qualifiers for isolating skin tones or specific colours. Power windows for targeted adjustments. Shot matching across scenes.
05
LUT Workflow
What LUTs are, how they work, and when to use them. Applying LUTs to log footage. Creating and saving your own LUTs. Understanding why a LUT is a starting point, not a finished grade.
06
Colour Science
Why log footage looks flat and how to grade it with intention. Colour spaces, gamma curves, and the relationship between what the camera captures and what the screen displays. V-Log, S-Log, and their grading paths.
07
Fairlight Audio
Audio levels, EQ, compression, and noise reduction. Mixing dialogue with music and ambient sound. Monitoring and metering for broadcast and web standards. Audio is where most beginners lose their audience.
08
Finishing and Delivery
Titles and lower thirds in Fusion. Export profiles for YouTube, Instagram, Vimeo, broadcast, and archival. Render settings, codecs, and bitrates. Delivering a finished piece that plays correctly everywhere.
Equipment
What You Work With

During the course you edit on Apple Mac Studio workstations running DaVinci Resolve Studio (the full paid version). This gives you access to GPU-accelerated rendering, the Neural Engine AI tools, advanced noise reduction, and the complete set of Resolve FX from day one.

After the course, you can continue practising on your own computer with the free version of DaVinci Resolve. It covers all the core editing, grading, Fairlight audio, and Fusion tools taught in this course. Blackmagic Design offers it as a permanent free download with no trial period and no watermarks.

Free vs. Studio
What the Free Version Cannot Do

The free version is genuinely powerful. A few limitations you will notice as your work grows:

  • Export ceiling: UHD 3840×2160 at 60fps maximum. No DCI 4K, no 8K export.
  • Slower renders: no full GPU-accelerated encoding. Studio renders the same timeline roughly 3× faster.
  • No Neural Engine AI: Magic Mask, face refinement, speed warp, object removal, and AI-assisted noise reduction are Studio only.
  • No advanced noise reduction: temporal and spatial noise reduction (the tools that rescue low-light footage) require Studio.
  • No 10-bit codec support: H.264 and H.265 10-bit import and export require Studio.
  • No HDR delivery: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HDR scopes are Studio only.
  • 30+ additional Resolve FX are exclusive to Studio, including film grain, lens correction, and optical blur.

None of these prevent you from learning. The editing, grading, and audio skills transfer directly. When your projects demand it, Studio is a one-time purchase of $295 with lifetime updates.
